The United Kingdom is facing an acute shortage in individuals who are skilled professionals
in the field of medicine and therefore the government is inviting applications from
doctors, dentists and nurses outside the United Kingdom to come and practice in
the UK.
Doctors
If doctors from outside the EU wish to practice medicine in the UK and also exercise
their various legal privileges that are associated with being a doctor, they will
need to register themselves to work in the UK. This will allow them to write prescriptions
and even sign death certificates. All these approvals are regulated by a body known
as the General Medical Council (GMC). Depending on the kind of role they’ll be taking
on and on the level of their responsibility, the prospective applicants will need
to register in all the following three options:
- Full Registration: This is conducted so that a doctor may understand fully
paid unsupervised employment in the United Kingdom and this will have to be gained
from the GMC. Most medical professionals who are qualified in the EEA region are
eligible for this kind of registration. Other regions which also qualify are: Australia,
South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and the West Indies.
- Limited Registration: Applicants who are looking to carry out any kind of
supervised training posts within the National Health Services (NHS) will need to
apply for this kind of registration.
- Specialist Registration: This is necessary if they are looking to serve as
a consultant to the NHS.
Dentists
If dentists from outside the EU wish to practice medicine in the UK and also exercise
their various legal privileges that are associated with being a doctor, they will
need to register themselves to work in the UK. All these approvals are regulated
by a body known as the General Dental Council (GDC). Depending on the kind of role
they’ll be taking on and on the level of their responsibility, the prospective applicants
will need to register in all the following two options:
- Full Registration: For a dentist from a non-EU country, they will need this
kind of registration to perform unsupervised activities in the UK. Dentists from
Australia, Hong Kong, South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia qualify
for this kind of a visa.
- Temporary Registration: Any individuals who are looking to do supervised
work, any training or any research or teaching will need this kind of registration.
Nurses
The regulatory body responsible for nurses is known as the Nursing and Midwifery
Council (NMC). Nurses who are qualified outside the EU will need to register with
the Overseas Nursing Program. They will need to take the IELTS with a score of over
6.5 overall and in each section. Nurses who have been qualified from Australia,
South Africa, New Zealand or Canada are usually considered pretty highly.
