Those who wish to apply for citizenship to the UK should understand that clearing the Life in the UK Test is an important prerequisite. This computer-based test is to be cleared by anyone seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain or naturalisation in the UK. The test requires a pass percentage of 75% to show that one has a good knowledge of British life and proficiency in the English language.

When should you take the test?

The test is to be taken as a part of your application for British citizenship or settlement in the UK.

What is the eligibility to take the Life in the UK test?
  • For starters, those applying for ILR or Indefinite Leave to Remain should take the test. This means if you have lived in the UK for 5 years, you are eligible to take the test.
  • Those who have been exempted when they were granted settlement, also need to take the test when applying for citizenship.
  • Those with a long residency of 10 years applying for citizenship can take the test.
  • HSMP (High Skill Migrant Program) is another option where you will be provided citizenship for your skills and you can take the test.
  • Those married to or are a partner of a British citizen, with a spouse/partner visa, showing proof of residency and cohabitation can also take the test.
  • Even if you are illiterate or have a visual or hearing impairment, you can take the test. You will have to check with your local test centre to see if they can accommodate you. If it is not possible, then contact the Home Office for guidance on how you may take the test.

Who are exempted from taking the British Citizenship test?
  • Those who are less than 18 years of age or over 65 years of age are exempted from taking it.
  • Those who have demonstrated their knowledge of language and life in the UK at the settlement stage do not have to do it again.
  • Those unable to do so because of a long-term physical or mental condition do not have to take the test. However, you need to provide a letter or a form from a doctor confirming your physical or mental condition.
